Taxonomy is designed to make your taxi experience better, from start to finish. Features include:
A destination search engine, allowing you to search by name or street address. It returns street intersections rather than numbered street addresses, so the taxi driver knows where to go.
A time and cost calculator that will tell you the important facts about your journey before you leave.
Foursquare check-ins: add your information while you're in the taxi, and we'll check you in as soon as you arrive. Get a push notification to your phone when you are near your destination.
A tip calculator to help you work out how much to give your taxi driver - and then a split calculator to work out how much each passenger owes.
The ability to automatically bill your friends for their share of the journey using Venmo- no more messing around with cash.
Ride reviews- enter your taxi driver's ID number and review your experience. Help us identify the best and worst NYC taxi drivers!
The NYC BigApps entry is just the start- in the future we're going to bring instant bookings with private car services, and better billing options. Check out the web site or follow @taxonomyapp on Twitter to keep up to date.
Taxonomy uses the Foursquare API for venue search and checkins, and CartoDB to to store and query street intersections for any address in the city.

Taxonomy is still awaiting approval for the App Store- a link will be added on the web site once it is available.
I love the user interface. Are you a designer by training?
Thanks- I'm a developer by trade- any design experience has come about as a result of both interest and necessity. Glad you like the look- there's plenty I want to add to it, though!
Taxonomy is now available in the App Store:

love your app! good luck to you too :)
Great design value. Wow.
Great stuff!
Thanks guys!
LOVE IT!
Automatically bill friends? Genius!
Is it planned for other cities as well as New York?
I certainly hope so. New York is definitely the "proving ground" for an idea like this, but it's an idea that would work globally- just takes time!
This is by far the best thing I've ever seen come from a public data contest, in terms of feature set, visual appeal, and potential monetization/scalability. Are you a one-person shop? That is unbelievable.
Dan,
Thanks! I'm a one-person shop, yes- I've been putting Taxonomy together in my spare time since the BigApps Hackathon (more at http://bit.ly/xu6JiC).
I'm definitely considering this as a v0.1 of the app- there are some improvements and bug fixes I'm dying to make but the rules state that I can't release any updates for the duration of the judging period, so I've been spending my time blogging about the app to raise visibility and hopefully some votes.
I'm glad you like it!
Great work Alistair - keep pedalling!
Great app, it looks extremely easy to use!
This should have placed!
Thanks! It was a shame to not have placed in BigApps, but big things are on the way for Taxonomy. Watch this space!
Great effort Alistair. Keep up the good work.
